This summer why not spend some quality time with your family while exploring the vast attractions West Lothian has to offer.
Located near West Calder, Five Sisters Zoo is fast becoming one of West Lothian’s most popular attractions. With Buster and Chloe, two beautiful Eurasian lynx cats, a monkey house and the three bears; Carmen, Suzi and Peggy, there is plenty to keep the family entertained.
Five Sisters Zoo also hosts a fantastic Leaping Lemurs Play area for children to enjoy. With an outdoor castle, a pirate ship play area, rope bridges, climbing frames and slides there is lots for kids to explore.
Opening last year, The Scottish Owl Centre, one of the world’s largest collection of owls, allows you to get up close and personal with a wide variety of owls. From a tiny Pygmy Owl to a Southern White-faced Owl, the centre is home to around 100 owls from 40 species around the world. No visit to The Scottish Owl Centre is complete without a turn on the giant owl slide!
For the perfect family day out why not take a trip to Almond Valley Heritage Centre. With a museum, pedal carts, an adventure zone and lots of farm animals to see there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
West Lothian’s Country Parks and The Year of Natural Scotland
Enjoy the great outdoors in West Lothian and take your pick from the area’s three country parks – Beecraigs, Polkemmet and Almondell & Calderwood. There are a whole host of events on over the summer months from bushcraft for kids to ranger activity weeks and overnight survival skills. 2013 is The Year of Natural Scotland, celebrating Scotland’s outstanding natural beauty, so there’s never been a better time to get back to nature.
Fun on the Water
The Linlithgow Canal Centre is the ideal place to be this summer with some great offers! Their exclusive loyalty card gives visitors a 30% discount after their first boat trip. This can be used until the 30th September as many times as you like. The second offer is for passengers who travel to the aqueduct on weekend trips. For every 4 passengers you only pay for 3 – a 25% discount! At just over £5 per half hour on the canal with tea and coffee this is a fantastic deal.
Experience the thrill of a ‘Mountainball’ run at Bankhead Mountainball, West Lothian. Home to the longest run in Scotland this is the perfect place to enjoy an out-of-the-ordinary day out with a 200m mountainballing experience.
The Low Port Centre,Linlithgow, is considered Central Scotland’s premier Outdoor Centre. A day out to the centre can consist of anything from adventure racing, to mountain biking, windsurfing or white water rafting. The indoor climbing wall is also the perfect place for those with a head for heights to test their skills.
For an adrenalin-fuelled day look no further than Bedlam Paintball or Delta Force Paintball. Paintball allows you to get fit, learn to work as a team, and have lots of fun while you’re doing it. Both sites provide an exciting, action packed day of paintball and a summer day trip you won’t forget.
History and Heritage
Step back in time this summer with Linlithgow’s Annet House Museum and Gardens. With a children’s maze and a beautiful garden to enjoy alongside the museum, this is both a cultural and fun visit for all the family. Then explore the rich history in the rest of the town by visiting Linlithgow Palace followed by the Linlithgow Canal Centre for a boat trip along the Union Canal. Find out about the captivating history of Bathgate town and its people, and the world’s first oil refinery, at the Bennie Museum.
Set in acres of beautiful parkland Hopetoun House, Scotland’s finest stately home, is the perfect place to spend a summer day with the family. The beautiful five star attraction is situated by the shores of the River Forth. With a range of outdoor activities including quad biking, archery, and clay shooting, or the chance to take part in a mini Highland Games, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

West Lothian offers visitors a great summer shopping day out. Or why not visit Bathgate’s traditional town centrefor a fantastic range of quality dining establishments and shops that suit all tastes. For those who prefer the traditional food shopping route, Linlithgow Farmers Market, which takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month in Linlithgow town centre, is the perfect place to go.
