About Broxburn & Uphall

Not all visitors to Broxburn and Uphall arrive by road. At the heart of Broxburn lies one of Scotland’s most precious natural assets, the Union Canal, used by boats ferrying between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Joining with the Forth and Clyde Canal, the waterway stretches right across the central belt, cutting through Broxburn and providing an invaluable transport and tourism link for the region.

About Broxburn and Uphall

Until shale oil was discovered in the area, Broxburn was a quiet neighbour to its busier, more industrious West Lothian counterparts. Then, for 60 years following the discovery of the oil in the late 19th century, Broxburn enjoyed being part of Scotland’s oil boom.

Around 9,000 people were employed by the oil industry in Broxburn in 1926, although the number had fallen to less than 3,000 people in 1957, by which time all of the shale mines in the area had been fully exploited.

Broxburn expanded so rapidly during this boom-time that the town now merges with its smaller neighbour, Uphall. Visit both communities to see how each has managed to retain its own individual identity.

Broxburn and Uphall lie close to the eastern boundary of West Lothian and are easily accessible from Glasgow and Edinburgh using the M8 and M9 motorways.
