Starting from Linlithgow Canal Centre, head west towards the Avon Viaduct (3 miles).

150 yeards before the viaduct turn right down some steps by the Avon Heritage Trail signpost. Follow this trail and at the end turn right up a narrow road, then left towards traffic lights. Turn right at the main road and head into the centre of Linlithgow. At Linlithgow Cross, marked by a large fountain, walk up the kirkgate, past St Michael’s Parish Church and through the gates of Linlithgow Palace.

The Palace is one of the most impressive ruins in Scotland, and where Mary Queen of Scots was born in 1542 – well worth a visit. Turn right and head towards the loch.  Follow the park through parkland until you reach the gate, which leads you through a lane up to the main Blackness Road. Turn left along this road and further up, left again through a gate and across a field at the each end of the loch. Follow the path around the loch, spotting many species of ducks, waders and of course, the ever hungry swans. Returning to the palace, head back down towards the Cross, turn left at the High St, walk along and turn right up the lane before the Platform 3 pub, which leads you back to the canal centre.
