On Our Doorstep: Unmissable Attractions Just Outside West Lothian

Living in (or visiting) West Lothian means having easy access to a wide range of local gems—from our historic towns to our rolling countryside. But there’s plenty to explore just beyond our borders too, perfect for day trips and spontaneous adventures. In this edition of “On Our Doorstep”, we’re highlighting a few amazing attractions that lie just outwith West Lothian, yet remain comfortably close enough to visit whenever the mood strikes!

The Kelpies – Falkirk

Towering over the Forth & Clyde Canal in Falkirk are The Kelpies, two colossal horse-head sculptures that have quickly become icons of modern Scotland. Designed by Andy Scott, they pay tribute to the country’s strong industrial heritage and the role of working horses in shaping our canals and communities.

  • Highlights:
    • Scale: Standing 30 metres tall, these sculptures are truly awe-inspiring up close.
    • Tours & Walks: Take a guided tour inside one of the heads to learn about the engineering behind them, or stroll around Helix Park’s pathways.
    • Accessibility: Approximately a 25-minute drive from central West Lothian, making it an easy half-day trip.

Top Tip: Visit in the evening when The Kelpies light up, creating a magical display against the night sky.

The Bridges – Queensferry

Scotland’s iconic trio of bridges—The Forth Bridge, The Forth Road Bridge, and the Queensferry Crossing—span the Firth of Forth between North and South Queensferry. While they’re not in West Lothian, they’re close enough to be considered “on our doorstep” and offer spectacular views of Scotland’s engineering marvels.

  • Highlights:
    • Heritage: The Forth Bridge (the red rail bridge) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its Victorian engineering brilliance.
    • Photo Opportunities: Head down to the waterfront for a perfect shot of all three bridges.
    • Day Out: Explore the quaint cobbled streets of South Queensferry, grab some local seafood, or take a boat trip around Inchcolm Island.

Top Tip: If you’re driving, approach via the M9 or A904 to enjoy the scenic route before arriving in the heart of historic Queensferry.

Forth Bridges

Crossing the Firth of Forth there are currently two bridges - one rail and two road. 'The Queensferry Crossing' opened recently in 2017, increasing the bridges across the Forth to 3.

Lost Shore Surf Resort – Near Ratho

A brand-new adventure on the cusp of West Lothian’s boundary, Lost Shore Surf Resort promises the thrill of surfing without the need to head to Scotland’s rugged coastline. Located near Ratho, this inland surf park is making waves (quite literally) for beginners and seasoned surfers alike.

  • Highlights:
    • Wave Pools: State-of-the-art technology creates artificial waves suitable for all ability levels.
    • Lessons & Gear: Whether you’re a novice or a pro, you can book lessons and hire equipment on-site.
    • Beyond Surfing: Keep an eye out for future plans—food outlets, relaxation areas, and more are set to open, making it a full-day experience.
