The West Lothian Dippers Facebook group often organises meet-ups, helps newcomers find swim buddies, and provides a wealth of local knowledge. Connecting with fellow swimmers is not only safer but also makes the experience more fun—someone’s always keen to share a tip or recommend a new swim spot.
A firm favourite among local enthusiasts, Avon Lagoon is nestled in a beautiful natural setting. Its calm waters and easy access make it a great place for your first open-water swim in the area.

Located on the edge of the Pentland Hills, Harperrig promises stunning hillside vistas. It’s a peaceful haven where you can swim against a backdrop of rolling countryside—a postcard-perfect way to connect with nature.
A challenging walk around the lower end of West Lothian which can take you right into the Pentlands. Distance: 9 mls/ 14.5km with a climb of 561m
Though temporarily closed during construction work around the new marina, The Claypit has been a beloved wild swimming spot for years. Keep an eye out for updates, as it’s expected to reopen soon and reclaim its place as a go-to location.
This is a peaceful walk along the canal side where you will find plenty of wildlife. Distance: 6 mls / 10kms
Known for its extraordinary sculpture park, Jupiter Artland also opens the Jencks Garden once a month (on Tuesday mornings during the season) for wild swimming. There’s a charge to swim, and spaces are limited, so be sure to check availability beforehand.
Jupiter Artland is an award-winning contemporary sculpture garden located just outside Edinburgh. Set over 100 acres of meadow, woodland and indoor gallery spaces, Jupiter Artland is home to over 30 permanent and unique site-specific sculptures as well as a seasonal programme of carefully curated exhibitions and events.
Fancy a sea swim with a historic twist? The shoreline between Blackness and Hopetoun serves up stunning views of Blackness Castle and the occasional seal companion. Sea temperatures here can be colder than inland waters, often around 3–4°C in winter, so wetsuits are strongly advised for comfort and safety.
Please note, the car park has limited spaces and will be monitored. It is only available for those that have booked tickets to visit the castle and its grounds. A recent application aims to officially designate a section of the River Almond, near the wildflower meadow in Almondell & Calderwood Country Park, as a bathing water spot. If approved, this will provide another accessible and scenic venue for wild swimming in West Lothian, bringing even more variety to the area’s open-water scene.
