East Calder

History

A market town, East Calder was initially used by cattle merchants transporting their cattle from Edinburgh, the Highlands, Crieff and nearby Falkirk and Linlithgow. The widening of the main through road created job opportunities for local residents which enabled them to buy more land and purchase cattle – grazing cows from whom, they were able to make butter and buttermilk.

The population of East Calder and surrounding villages grew in 1846 with the advent of the railways and the discovery and subsequent booming shale oil industry.

Of historical interest is the old grave yard and ruins of 16^th Century St Cuthbert’s Parish Church and Ormiston Hall constructed in 1851.

The East Calder Gala is a local highlight in June dating back to 1919.

The nearby Almondell and Calderwood Country park provide countryside walks and trails providing the opportunity to explore nature and small wildlife. There are also play areas, visitor centres and gift shops.

Gardening enthusiasts should pay a visit to Almondell Garden Centre to view their excellent range of plants, garden furniture and can enjoy a coffee or light snack in their popular cafeteria.

Visitors wishing to extend their visit and will find a warm welcome in one of the local guest houses including award winning, ranch style Ashcroft Farmhouse.  Overshiel Farmhouse is a beautiful, Victorian guesthouse set on a peaceful family run 300-acre farm and Whitecroft Bed and Breakfast is surrounded by farmland, perfect for business or pleasure.
