Linlithgow to Commemorate 500th Anniversary of Historic Battle

Linlithgow, Scotland - The year 2026 will mark the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge, a pivotal yet often overlooked conflict in Scottish history. To honour this significant battle between opposing Scots a coalition of community groups is organising a series of commemorative activities throughout the year.

Background of the Battle

The Battle of Linlithgow Bridge took place on September 4, 1526. It was one of the deadliest skirmishes in the power struggle that followed the death of James IV at the Battle of Flodden. Approximately 10,000 men loyal to the Dowager Queen Margaret, led by the Earl of Lennox, found themselves trapped near Linlithgow Bridge after crossing the River Avon. They were met by forces commanded by the Earl of Arran, bolstered by pro-Douglas reinforcements from Edinburgh. The ensuing clash resulted in the massacre of 3,000 men and the murder of Lennox himself.

Although largely forgotten today, the battle was significant in the history of the Stewart line of succession and occurred within the Linlithgow Burgh boundary. Local organisers aim to ensure this chapter of history receives the recognition it deserves.
