Countdown to the British Pipe Band Championships

Today (Wednesday 27th February) saw the launch of one of this year’s biggest spectacles. Members of the West Lothian Highland Games and local pipers from Torphicen, Bathgate and West Lothian Scools Pipe Bands came together at the Bathgate Partnership Centre to officially launch the British Pipe Band Championships.

Over 130 British Pipe Bands and 3,500 pipers of all ages from across the UK are expected to descend upon the Meadow Park in Bathgate on Saturday 25th May, to compete in this prestigious competition.

West Lothian will welcome this Championship for the next three years, this will be a huge boost for our area.

Tickets for this fun filled family event are now on sale and organisers really hope that the people of West Lothian will come together in large numbers to support what will be one of the biggest collection of pipers the area has ever witnessed. It will also add to the growing number of events which draw people in to West Lothian throughout the summer months.

Matt Purdie, President of the West Lothian Highland Games said: “It was a huge honour for the West Lothian Highland Games to have secured such a wonderful event. This move marks a return to hosting major competitions in West Lothian and with this in mind we want to reach out to the people of West Lothian and ensure they support the 2013 British Pipe Band Championship. Not only are we encouraging people from further afield but we want people closer to home to experience what is set to be a very memorable occasion.”

James Bailey, Chair of Visit West Lothian said: ” To have secured the British Pipe Band Championships is another great opportunity to showcase West Lothian to the rest of the UK. Our calendar of events has strengthened significantly over the last couple of years and the championshop will add to this even further, ensuring we attract visitors from far and wide, who will continue to come back to West Lothian in the future.”
