Family History

Ancestry & You

Why not walk in the footsteps of Outlander’s Frank Randall and discover more about your family history.

Our history is what makes us who we are today. From the way we look to how we speak, it all comes from our ancestry. There are now more ways than ever to trace back your family history and I encourage each and every one of you to do it.

How to do it?

The West Lothian Local History Library is the best place to start! This magnificent facility holds information on: Index to birth, marriage and death notices in the West Lothian Courier 1873-1930, Old parish records, Pre-1855 monumental inscriptions, International Genealogical Index for Scotland and Ireland, Poll and hearth tax records, 1690s, Index to the 1891 census for all of Scotland,Confirmations and Inventories 1876-1933 for Scotland and Sources of information on First World War casualties

If you don’t stay in West Lothian there are many other ways to discover more about your past! You can use one of the many different ancestry websites to learn more about your very own history and heritage such as Find My Past or Ancestry (which West Lothian Local History Library has access to for free.)

So why not give it a go and who knows what you shall discover!
