A lovely stroll through the woods of Almondell & Calderwood Country Park. Distance: 4mls / 6.5kms
From the car park follow the asphalt track and turn right at the park notice board. After a curve in the path bear right onto a red shale track and through a woodland trail which takes you high above the River Almond which is on your left.
Go down the steps and cross over a metal footbridge. Turn left and follow the path upstream past the visitor centre and café until you come to the Naismith Bridge. Don’t cross the bridge but continue on the path, past a footbridge and under the viaduct.
Cross over a small footbridge which leads to a grey bridge over the river and into the woodland, passing sewage works on the left. Walk uphill then down to the Calder Water – do not cross the bridge but turn left onto a track which takes you up to the main road.
Turn left and follow the road past the ruins of St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, through East Calder and back to the car park.
You can extend this walk by descending the steps by the bridge at Calder Water and following the Calderwood walk.
