A refreshing walk along the shores of the Forth which gives fantastic views of the Forth Bridges. Distance: 4 miles/6.5kms
This walk is found just beyond the West Lothian boundary in Falkirk.
From Carriden Parish Church, on the corner of Carriden Brae and Bridgeness Road, head east along a tarmac road, past factory units, heading towards Blackness. Pass through a metal gate onto a track. Walk along this track through woodland, following the edge of the River Forth.
At the end of this track take steps down to a rough path that hugs the shoreline. There are some superb views of the Forth Bridges and Fife to be enjoyed. Follow the path into Blackness and up to the dramatic castle, which is open to the public all year round. Retrace your steps back to the start at Bo’ness.
Built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons. Blackness was never destined as a peaceful residence, its previous roles have included a garrison fortress and state prison!
